Construction of Titanic began on March 31, 1909, at the famous Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. At the time, the shipyard was one of the largest in the world and had built many impressive vessels, but nothing compared to Titanic.

Warnings About Ice

As Titanic sailed westward across the Atlantic, several nearby ships sent wireless radio messages warning that unusually large fields of sea ice and icebergs had drifted into the shipping lanes.

Throughout April 14, operators aboard ships including the Caronia, Baltic, Californian, and Mesaba transmitted warnings to Titanic.

Some warnings were delivered directly to Captain Edward Smith or the bridge officers. Others reached the wireless room while the operators were busy sending personal messages for passengers.

Although Titanic adjusted course slightly farther south earlier in the voyage, the ship continued traveling at nearly full speed.

This was common practice in 1912. Captains often relied on experienced lookouts to spot ice in time to safely steer around it.

Unfortunately, the weather that evening created nearly perfect conditions for disaster. The sea was unusually calm, making it difficult to see waves breaking against icebergs. There was no moon, making the horizon exceptionally dark.

The Night Everything Changed

At 11:40 p.m. on April 14, lookouts Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee were scanning the dark horizon from the crow's nest nearly 100 feet above the water.

Suddenly Fleet noticed a dark shape directly ahead.

"Iceberg, right ahead!"

He rang the warning bell three times and telephoned the bridge.

First Officer William Murdoch reacted immediately, ordering the helm hard to port while attempting to slow the ship.

Titanic narrowly missed a direct head-on collision, but its starboard side scraped against the underwater portion of the iceberg.

Many passengers barely noticed the impact.

Some later described it as feeling like someone had gently dragged a giant finger along the side of the ship.

Below the waterline, however, the iceberg had bent steel plates inward and opened several narrow gaps through which freezing seawater poured into the forward compartments.

More than 2,200 passengers and crew were aboard.

Many assume Titanic did not have enough lifeboats because shipbuilders thought the vessel was unsinkable.

At approximately 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, Titanic broke apart and disappeared beneath the ocean.

More than 1,500 people lost their lives.

About 700 survived.

Most who entered the freezing water died from cold within minutes.
